Announcing our 2008 - 2009 Season

Tried and true American classic comedy, innovative retelling of a holiday standard, world premiere drama of hope among ruin, musical assassinations, contemporary satire, and a whacky look at horror with a musical twist – all coming to Hole in the Wall for its 36th season. Hole in the Wall Theater, the winner of the Hartford Advocates’ BEST Community Theater for 2008, presents a compelling season that offers a variety of plays for the savvy theatergoer and novice alike.

Starting out this exciting season is Neil Simon’s classic comedy of young love, laughs and kinichis in Barefoot in the Park. Opening on Friday, September 12 and running Fridays and Saturdays through October 11, 2008, this show offers a nostalgic look at the 1960’s and the innocence we all may have had.

Next up is a different perspective on the traditional Dickens’ holiday classic. In Tom Mula’s Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, we get the familiar story told through the eyes of Scrooge’s late partner, Jacob Marley. This innovative look at what comes from second chances runs from Friday, November 14 through Saturday, December 13, 2008.

Running Friday, January 16 through Saturday, February 14, 2009 is the world premiere of local playwright Jenny Lecce’s HeAVEN. Fiercely human and bitingly funny, this show is about three out-of-work men who vie for first prize in a publicity stunt where the one who camps out longest on a billboard platform wins a new mobile home.

Intrigue, the history of presidential assassinations, and a musical score that ranges from folk to ragtime to Broadway showstoppers combine in this captivating blockbuster Assassins by Stephen Sondheim. This musical retelling of America’s dark side creates a kaleidoscopic, hallucinatory revue and runs Friday, March 20 through Saturday, April 18, 2009.

Douglas Turner Ward’s contemporary satire of black and white America is seen in his play Day of Absence. Funny, pointed, and satirical, this tale of what happens when all the black citizens in a mythical southern town disappear for a day is scheduled for Friday, May 22 through Saturday, June 20, 2009.

Rounding out this diversified season is another world premiere. Running Friday, July 24 through Saturday, August 22, 2009 is William Arnold’s Night of the Musical Dead. We all know the “B movie” cult classic. Now see it hilariously told with a vibrant and exciting musical score. What do you do when the undead come knocking on your door? Answer? Sing ‘em a song!

Philosophy

The specifics of our theater's philosophy have been argued since we opened up shop in the Hole in the Wall Bookstore more than 25 years ago. However, the basic philosophy remains unchanged and can be summarized in one sentence:

Hole in the Wall Theater will allow anyone who walks through our doors to enjoy theater at whatever level he or she desires. more»

History

Hole in the Wall presented the first production in its existence, The Time of Your Life, in 1972 at the bookstore of founding member Paco Robida. Located at 12 Oak Street in New Britain, the discount paperback bookstore was called, aptly enough, the "Hole in the Wall Bookstore," thus giving rise to the theater's unusual name. more»
