HITW 40th Season

Hole in the Wall Announces 40th Anniversary Season

(New Britain, CT) – Musicals old and new, plays with timeless messages about life and death, and brand-new works chronicling trailer parks and space aliens highlight Hole in the Wall Theater’s 40th anniversary season.

The theater’s 2012-2013 season kicks off in September with the Jean Giraudoux classic, The Madwoman of Chaillot. Written in 1943, The Madwoman of Chaillot resonates today with its tale of an eccentric woman who, aided by a troupe of vagabonds and street performers, turns the tables on a group of greed-obsessed “men of industry” who plan to destroy Paris because they think it’s floating on a pool of oil. Matty Skwiot directs the show which runs Fridays and Saturdays, September 14th through October 6th, and Sundays, September 23rd and 30th.

Spring Awakening, with a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, is a rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1892 German play by Frank Wedekind. Set in late-19th century Germany, it concerns teenagers experiencing the tumult of their own sexuality. Their unforgettable journey from youth to adulthood is powerfully conveyed through Victorian text and contemporary music. Show dates are Fridays and Saturdays, and two Thursdays from November 9th thru December 8th. Todd Santa Maria directs.

Hole in the Wall’s third show is the world-premiere of Attack of the Space Nymphos from Uranus, written and directed by Bill Arnold. Follow the adventures of Kate Stanwyk, crack reporter for the Daily Citizen as she investigates the strange phenomenon of mysterious lights in the sky. Are they naturally occurring or something far more sinister? The aliens have landed. The fate of mankind is in the balance. What will it take to save the world? Find out, Fridays and Saturdays, January 11th through February 2nd. Sunday matinees are January 20th and 27th.

How does one live, knowing that death is imminent? Three residents in a hospice take the journey to answer that question in Michael Cristofer's Pulitzer-Prize winning play The Shadow Box. A play as much about living as about dying, The Shadow Box deals with love and loss, smiling in the face of pain, and finally saying the things that need to be said. Dennis Hull directs. The show runs Fridays and Saturdays, March 8th through 30th, with Sunday matinees on March 17th and 24th.

Jesus returns to clear his name in the world premiere of Whiskey Tango, written and directed by John Peifer. This twangy celebration of life, truth and compassion in a New England trailer park runs Fridays and Saturdays, May 3rd through June 1st, with matinees on Sunday, May 12th and 19th.

(Note: We have substitued The House of Yes for Whiskey Tango this season) It will run on the same dates.

Hole in the Wall closes its 40th season with the classic Cole Porter musical Anything Goes, book by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman. When the S.S. American heads out to sea, etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love. The songs include such all-time favorites as "You're the Top", "I Get a Kick Out of You" and, of course, “Anything Goes.” Ted Guhl directs the show, which runs Fridays and Saturdays, July 12th through August 10th. Sunday matinees are July 21st and 28th.

In addition to the six shows that make up Hole in the Wall’s regular season, the theater presents a wide variety of showcases, ranging from improv comedy to the annual Ceilidh Celtic music festival. Dates, times, and prices may vary.

All “mainstage” performances run Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. Sunday matinees are at 2:00 p.m. General admission to non-musicals is $20 adults, $15 students and seniors; musicals are $25 and $20, respectively. In keeping with HITW’s policy of making theater available to everyone regardless of ability to pay, the second Friday performance of each show is pay what you can afford. Second Friday tickets are on a first come first served basis. All other tickets may be purchased on-line at www.hitw.org or reservations for will call can be made by calling
