Auditions for Proof

Hello Hole in The Wall Friends and Family!

The 50th anniversary is plugging along! Barbecue is set to go up and the cast of Love’s Labour’s Lost is coming together. With that, we only have one show left to start putting together. That’s right! HITW is announcing auditions for its FINAL show of the landmark season. Directed by Jenna Schultz and produced by Terrance J. Peters and John R. Bosco, we bring you David Auburn’s Proof.

We meet Catherine, the daughter of Robert, a genius of mathematics. After a long struggle with mental illness, Robert passes on but leaves behind his notebooks. Amid all the scribbles and nonsense, there is something that may be of major mathematical value. But did Robert write it? And can Catherine keep her own life and mind together trying to prove its worth?

Auditions for the show will be held at 2pm on August 28th and 7pm on August 29th at the theater. Requirements for all potential actors include:

  • A reliable form of transportation.
  • Attendance to one General Meeting at the theater (held on the second Wednesday of each month)
  • Attendance to one performance of the show before Proof, Love’s Labour’s Lost.
  • Attendance to the set strike for both Love’s Labour’s Lost and Proof (both of which are the Sunday after the final performance of each show)

At the auditions, headshots and resumes are welcome but not required. Those auditioning will be asked to list prior acting credits. Actors are asked to prepare a 1-2 minute monologue and familiarize themselves with the show. Side readings of the show will also be held.

The show consists of four characters, 2 men and 2 women. The role of Christine has already been cast.

The remaining roles are:

Claire: (20-30s F) Catherine’s older sister. A stylish type-a city girl. She returns to Chicago for her father’s funeral. After seeing the state of her sister, Claire goes on a mission to get Catherine to move back to New York with her. Claire is the first to question if her little sister is going down the same path as their father.

Hal: (20-30s M) One of Robert’s former PhD students. After Robert’s death, Hal decides to take on the task of raking through the 103 notebooks left behind for anything of value. Throughout Hal’s visits to Robert’s household, Hal develops a friendship and eventual romantic relationship with Catherine. When a Proof is discovered, Hal has a hard time believing it could have come from a woman with no formal education.

Robert: (40+ M) The father of Catherine and Claire. A famous mathematician, professor, and loving father. Throughout his adult life Robert suffered from a mental illness that is never explicitly diagnosed. At the beginning of the play Robert has recently passed and now the question of if his notes were genius or if it was illness is in question.

Hole in The Wall Theater is located at 116 Main Street in New Britain, CT and would like to thank the CT Humanities Council, CT DECD Supporting Arts Grant, and the CT Cultural Fund Operating Support Grant for allowing this landmark season to take place.

As always, we are excited to put together another show to entertain everyone. So if you want to be a part of the show, come on by, and we’ll see you on the stage!
