Last Call for A Doll’s House

Attention!

This is a last call to any and all potential actors out there! On September 16th and 17th, we at Hole in the Wall Theater will be holding auditions for the second show in our season: A Doll’s House, written by Henrik Ibsen, and directed by Steven Siemiatkoski. The play will run nine (9) shows on Fridays and Saturdays starting on November 16th until December 8th, with one (1) Sunday matinee on December 2nd.

The play will follow the trials of family strife and social norms as seen through the eyes of a housewife. The play consists of nine (9) characters as follows:

Nora Helmer (F 25-30) Nora is the central character of the play and married to Torvald Helmer. At first, Nora is presented as playful, childlike, and naive to the ways of the world. Small acts of rebellion and exposed secrets indicate she is not as happy or innocent as she appears. She eventually realizes her role in her marriage and finds the strength to leave.

Torvald Helmer (M 25-35) Nora’s husband. He is proud of his new position at the bank as well as his authority over his wife. He does not see Nora as an equal but rather as a childlike doll to be possessed. Interestingly, his behavior toward Nora is both kind and patronizing. Social status is very important to Torvald.

Nils Krogstad (M 25-35) A lawyer who went to school with Torvald and now holds a subordinate position at the same bank. A contradictory character; Krogstad is willing to use seedy tactics to get what he needs, although he is sympathetic. An unconventional villain.

Christina Linde (F 25-30) Nora’s childhood friend, Christina has recently arrived in town seeking employment. She is a bit different from Nora; reasonable and capable of maintaining sensibility. She has been struggling with poverty for several years. She and Krogstad had a romantic past.

Dr Rank (M 30-45) Torvald’s best friend and everyday visitor to the Helmers. He has contracted a critical illness and is at the end of his life. He has harbored intimate feelings for Nora which he expresses.

Anna (F 50-65) Nanny to the three Helmer children. She had also been Nora’s nanny. A kind-hearted woman.

Helmer Children – Bob, Emmy and Ivar. The eldest is 7. The children are seen very briefly, mostly during a game of hide and seek.

Auditions will be held at the theater at 7pm on the aforementioned dates, with potential callbacks on September 18th, and will consist of readings from the script. Resumes should be provided (whether copied or written on the audition form), and headshots are welcome (but not required). Be sure to have a list of potential conflicts throughout the rehearsal and show runs, as well as a reliable mode of transportation. Those picked to perform will be asked to attend one (1) general meeting, one (1) work call, and one (1) performance of the current show, Final Arrangements. Attendance at the strike for Final Arrangements and A Doll’s House will also be asked of performers.
